Thomas Tuchel believes N’Golo Kante’s best position is in a ‘double six’ and has backed the ‘world class’ midfielder to be a vital component in his new Chelsea side.

Tuchel was without the injured World Cup winner for his first game in charge against Wolves at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, which ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw.

The German boss has been drafted in to replace Frank Lampard, who was relieved of his duties on Monday after 18 months in charge.

Kante was mostly used as the sole No.6 in a midfield three by Lampard, but his successor sees the 29-year-old operating most effectively in a double pivot alongside another defensive midfielder.

‘I think he is the strongest in the double-six, in the centre, the heart of the game,’ Tuchel said.

‘For me he is a double six because we can use his energy, his range in his game, his ability to recover the ball.

‘For me he is a guy who is a big, big helper for everybody, with the mentality of a water-carrier – but at the same time a world class player who played a crucial role in the World Cup win for France.

‘That’s why it is super important for me to have him.’

Kante has been out for three weeks with a hamstring injury, but Tuchel revealed he returned to training on Thursday, which suggests he could be in contention to face Burnley on Sunday.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss has also admitted that he attempted to sign Kante long before arriving at Stamford Bridge.

‘I fought many years to have N’Golo Kante in my team and now I have him here, also Olivier Giroud, we have a clear picture,’ the German manager said after the Wolves draw.

‘I have been following the Premier League for many years both in Dortmund and in Paris so I have a clear picture of what the guys are capable of.’
