Jurgen Klopp issued a pointed response to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s claim that Manchester United could not be facing Liverpool at a better time ahead of Sunday’s Premier League summit meeting.

The champions appeared to have underlined their status as undisputed favourites to retain their crown after hammering Crystal Palace 7-0 prior to Christmas.

But Klopp’s once relentless machine have failed to win their three subsequent matches, culminating in a defeat at Southampton.

Klopp was forced to deploy Jordan Henderson as a makeshift centre-half at St Mary’s with his defensive injury crisis showing little sign of abating.

Joel Matip returned to training on Friday but his manager will be forced to make a late decision on the former Schalke defender and even if he returns, United’s cohort of pacy forwards will no doubt fancy their chances.

United, meanwhile, have capitalised on the indifferent form of their rivals and opened up a three-point lead at the top of the table following Tuesday’s win over Burnley, but Klopp is adamant his side will rise to the challenge on Sunday after the squad spoke frankly about their recent travails at a team meeting earlier this week.

‘Losing at Southampton was absolutely not what we wanted,’ the German coach explained. But the next day (after a day off) we spoke and the boys had their say as well, all that kind of stuff.

‘We know what went wrong. We want to change. Now, we have to put in place on the pitch. That is the situation.

‘I’m really looking forward to this game, to be honest. I know Ole said that this is the best moment to play against Liverpool… yeah? Let’s see.’
