INTRO: The Lao women’s rugby team is gearing up to compete in the 17th Asian games to be hosted by the Republic of Korea from September 29 to October 2. According to the Lao Rugby Federation, this is the first time the Lao Rugby Federation is throwing their support behind the 12-player women’s team, after the men’s rugby team proved to be unprepared for the games. STORY: In Vientiane on Thursday, the federation organised a party and also reported on the Lao women’s team’s preparations for the games. Vice President of the Lao Rugby Federation and the Vice President of the Lao Journalists’ Association, Somsanouk Mixay, the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to Laos, Kim Soo-Gwon, senior officials and the women’s rugby team attended the event.
The Lao women’s rugby team will compete in the Women Rugby 7s event at the games. Last month, the team faced a Thailand rugby club in a friendly match. The results showed that the Lao women’s team had improved significantly. Before travelling to South Korea on September 28, the team will face the rugby club from Thailand once more.

According to the Lao Rugby Federation, it would be a testing experience for their team as they would be competing in several events throughout the day, adding that they would be training hard ahead of the games to ensure that their minds and bodies were prepared for the gruelling challenge.

The team has been training for more than five months. During the Asian Games, the women’s team would be exchanging cultures and good experiences with the teams coming from many countries across the world.
The rugby events at the Asian Games will be separated into groups, with Group A comprising Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Laos. The Lao team hopes to come out with a win but they admit that it will be difficult as the opponents are stronger in build.
