Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos hoped Lionel Messi would stay at Barcelona but admitted he had earned the respect to be able to decide his own future.

Messi told the Catalan club last week that he wished to leave and wanted to enact a clause in his contract that would allow him to go on a free transfer.

The clause actually expired at the end of May – and LaLiga confirmed that it was still active.

Messi did not turn up for COVID-19 testing or participate in training as he no longer seems himself as a Barcelona employee.

The Argentina superstar’s father headed to the club on Wednesday for showdown talks with president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

A reunion with former Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola has been mooted with Man City reportedly set to offer him a huge contract.

Barca presidential candidate Victor Font told talkSPORT that City are the top candidates to sign him.
Not everyone wants to see him leave LaLiga – even his arch rivals Real Madrid.

Sergio Ramos would like to see him stay with the Catalan club as it is best for Spanish football.

Ramos said: ”He has earned the respect to decide his future. I don’t know if he’s doing it in the best way. But for Spanish football, for Barça and for us, we’d like him to stay. Leo makes the Spanish league better, his team better and the Clásicos more attractive.”
