Gary Neville says Chelsea have a serious ‘problem’ on their hands this summer, with the club ready to take a massive loss on world-record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga after the Spaniard’s woeful 2019/20 campaign.

Kepa became the most expensive goalkeeper in history when he completed a £71million switch from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea back in 2018 but the 25-year-old has badly struggled to live up to expectations in west London.

The Spain international even lost his place to 38-year-old Willy Caballero towards the end of last season and the Blues are on the hunt for his replacement, with Edouard Mendy, Jan Oblak, Nick Pope and Andre Onana all linked in recent weeks.

Mendy has emerged as the most likely to join Chelsea this summer but the Premier League giants are yet to meet Rennes’ £31m price tag for the French shot-stopper.

Discussing the situation with Stadium Astro, Manchester United legend Neville said: ‘Lampard will act, he’s [Kepa] not settled at all at Chelsea and he’s not been particularly good.

‘David de Gea has been good at United for five or six years so I think he deserves more credit and more of a chance because he has come through a difficult early period but then he was world-class for four of five seasons and was Manchester United’s player of the year.

‘Kepa is struggling at Chelsea and I don’t think Frank Lampard fancies him.’

Neville spoke to Stadium Astro about Kepa’s Chelsea future

Neville believes Lampard has proven beyond doubt that he’s not a fan of Kepa, with Caballero starting Chelsea’s FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal last month.

‘The problem they’ve got is that they spent £70m on him which is just an enormous amount of money and they won’t get that back,’ he added.

‘Frank Lampard has left him out now numerous times so he’s not hidden the fact that he doesn’t quite like the way he’s performing so they’ve got a real challenge with the acquisition.

‘I think Kepa’s said he’s fighting for his spot. We’ll see what happens but I know the manager doesn’t like him.’

Chelsea legend Petr Cech, now a technical and performance advisor at Stamford Bridge, admits Kepa had a poor 2019/20 campaign but insists he could still have a future at the club.

‘Kepa struggled last season, that is unquestionable,’ Cech told Sport.cz.

‘But the club invested in him and gave him a long-term contract because they believe he has the qualities and attributes to be successful.

‘Additions will be made to the squad, perhaps even in goal, and this is what is being discussed now.

‘But nobody is giving up on Kepa and we all hope he has a great future.’
