Neil Lennon reassures Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney he can return to Celtic Park

Neil Lennon insists Kieran Tierney is always welcome back at Celtic, despite receiving a torrent of abuse from some fans following his move to Arsenal.

The Scotland international joined the Gunners last summer in a move worth a reported £25million after several trophy-laden seasons in Glasgow.

After incurring several nasty injuries in north London, Tierney quickly became a fan favourite with his no-nonsense approach to the game and humble attitude off the pitch.

Yet he has become deterred from returning to Celtic Park as a fan by a small section of supporters who chastised him for leaving to join the Premier League side.

Lennon was disheartened to hear this from a Bhoys fan through and through and offered his sincerest apologies and a warm invitation to the 23-year-old.

When asked about the abuse, Lennon said: “I’m not aware of it.

“We don’t want him feeling uncomfortable coming back because he’s more than welcome here, that’s for sure.

“Sometimes you get people on social media pretending to be Celtic fans. It’s a platform where you leave yourself open to abuse.

“There’s always that little bit of soreness with fans when a top player or top manager leaves the club and goes elsewhere.

“I think 99.9 per cent of supporters think the world of him.

“It’s their own personal choice, a lot of good things will come from it as well. I’ve been on it myself and experienced it. It took up way too much of my time. A lot of it was a lot of nonsense, you get a lot of fake stories.

“It’s not real, it’s really not real. You can be a hero one day and a villain the next. It’s just not the way of the world.

“I can’t force them not to do it but sometimes you’re just better off without it.”
