Former Manchester United star Wes Brown says he’s hoping to see young English duo Jadon Sancho and Dean Henderson at the club and battling for places in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team next season.

The Red Devils identified Sancho as their number one transfer target at the start of the summer and the 20-year-old England international has agreed personal terms over a move to Old Trafford.

However, Borussia Dortmund have been playing hardball over Sancho’s price and United missed their August 5 deadline to cough up £108million for the winger.

Sancho has since flown out to Bad Ragaz, Switzerland with the rest of Dortmund’s squad for pre-season training and the club’s sporting director, Michael Zorc, appeared to rule out a summer sale earlier this month.

But ex-United defender Brown is hopeful his former team can still get a deal over the line for the attacker.

‘We’ve got some young, exciting attacking players but Sancho would be another layer of the cake,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘He’s exciting, he’s young, he can score goals and is good with assists. If they can get that done it would be perfect.

‘United can always improve. The defence, midfield; the more competition going on all over the field, the better the team becomes.’

Henderson confirmed his return to Old Trafford this week after an impressive two-year loan spell with Sheffield United but it’s not yet known whether Solskjaer has plans for the goalkeeper ahead of the new season.

David de Gea’s form dipped dramatically across the 2019/20 campaign and Brown feels Henderson could push the Spaniard for the number one jersey.

‘I would bring Henderson back,’ Brown added.

‘He was excellent at Sheffield United last season.

‘All positions need competition and Henderson has proved he is more than capable of playing in the Premier League.

‘Henderson will want to come back to Manchester United and prove to Solskjaer he should be number one.

‘Competition is good for morale and will get both players playing at the top of their game.’
