Jurgen Klopp will not sanction a deal for Thiago Alcantara unless one of his midfielders leaves Liverpool this season, according to reports.

Liverpool have persistently been linked with the midfielder but baulked at Bayern Munich’s £27.2million asking price for a player with just a year left on his current deal.

Finances were thought to be the key issue for a cash-strapped Reds this summer, but the Independent claim that is not the case.

Klopp has built a tight-knit and elite squad and is concerned about upsetting the balance by adding another world class midfielder.

While Harry Wilson and Marko Grujic are up for sale, there is not expected to be any departures from the current crop of first-team midfielders.

James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are targeting more game time next season while the starting trio of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldum are also expected to stay at Anfield.

Wijnaldum is the only one among the group who could exit, as the Reds continue to negotiate a new deal with the Dutchman.

New Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has also been linked with Wijnaldum but the player and Liverpool are said to be relaxed about the current situation.

Wijnaldum might be tempted to sign a pre-contract with Barcelona in January and that could free up Liverpool to make their move for Thiago then.

But Klopp is eager to maintain his squad’s cohesion and happiness, meaning a deal for Thiago this summer appears unlikely.

The news will be a blow to Liverpool fans who have watched Thiago excel in the Champions League with Bayern.

The Bundesliga champions reached the Champions League final with victory over Lyon on Wednesday night and Thiago has been bossing the midfield during his side’s best performances.

Liverpool are not expected to make any major signings this summer having ran away with the Premier League title last season.

The Reds are in Austria for pre-season and do have one new face among the squad after the signing of Kostas Tsimikas as cover at left-back.
