Louis Saha insists Olivier Giroud will not be worried about the arrival of fellow striker Timo Werner at Chelsea.

Frank Lampard signed Germany international Werner from RB Leipzig earlier in the summer in a deal that cost £47.5million.

Werner’s arrival at Stamford Bridge could mean even less game-time for Giroud, who has struggled to cement a place in Chelsea’s starting line-up since moving from London rivals Arsenal in 2018.

The Frenchman has consistently scored important goals for the Blues but has nevertheless played back-up to the likes of Tammy Abraham and could slip even further down the pecking order now Werner has joined him in west London.

But former Premier League striker Saha says Giroud is a ‘tough cookie’ who will not be alarmed by the added competition at Chelsea.

‘Olivier Giroud is a very tough cookie and he will not worry too much about the arrival of Timo Werner at Chelsea,’ Saha told the Football Index Podcast.

‘Giroud wants to score and he wants to help his teammates. He is a competitor and wherever he is, he will always perform.

‘Giroud is very motivated and I’m sure that next year we will hear about him again.’

The ex-Manchester United and France star added: ‘I think he is very underrated.

‘He was criticised when he arrived at Arsenal because people would compare him to stylish players like Thierry Henry or Dennis Bergkamp, but he’s a different player and he scores goals for every club he plays for.’

Werner and fellow new Chelsea signing Hakim Ziyech began training with their new team-mates earlier in the month and Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta has been impressed by their impact.

‘Both of them have shown their quality in training in these past couple of weeks,’ he told Chelsea’s official website.

‘We have seen their potential offensively, the way they can create chances and the way they can score goals so they are big additions to the team.

‘The quicker and easier they can adapt to the Premier League, the better it will be for everybody so it was good to have them with the group for a few weeks at the end of the season.

‘They are already integrated and know everybody so it’s been a very good time for that and now we’re all looking forward to seeing them on the pitch.’
