Kylian Mbappe is confident his Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Neymar is on course to break Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s dominance of the Ballon d’Or.

The Brazilian superstar moved to the French capital three years ago, in part to escape the shadow of Messi in a bid to establish himself as the best footballer in the world.

Neymar has endured a turbulent three years at PSG, struggling with injuries, falling out with former head coach Unai Emery and been guilty of several disciplinary breaches.

While PSG have continued to dominate Ligue 1, they have struggled to make an impression in Europe despite record breaking levels of investment from the club’s Qatari owners.

After several embarrassing defeats and spectacular collapses in recent seasons, the French champions are finally in position to win a first Champions League title after qualifying for the final following a 3-0 win over RB Leipzig in Lisbon last night.

And while Neymar was not among the goalscorers, he gave a stellar performance capped by his outrageous assist for Angel di Maria’s goal which put Thomas Tuchel’s side 2-0 up before half-time.

This year’s Ballon d’Or was cancelled due to the global coronavirus pandemic but Mbappe is sure a matchwinning performance against either Bayern Munich or Lyon on Sunday would see Neymar break the stranglehold Messi and Ronaldo have had on Europe’s most prestigious individual award.

He said: ‘Yes, the coach said that we get along very well, and we get along very well on and off the pitch, so I thin it’s important for the group too. It is a pleasure to play with a player like Neymar.

‘He’s one of the best players in the world and he proved it today. Maybe he hasn’t scored a goal but he assisted which is very important too as (Angel) Di Maria benefited from it.

‘I believe the Ballon d’Or is not decided yet, but I’m sure that if wins the Champions League, of course he’s going to be in position to win the trophy.

‘I think he is destined to win those type of trophies. I hope he wins the trophy because tht would mean that we have won the Champions League.’
