Barcelona have ended Manchester United’s hopes of signing Ousmane Dembele this summer after the club’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, described the Frenchman as ‘untouchable’.

The winger has been touted as an alternative to Dortmund superstar Jadon Sancho, who looks set to stay in Germany after the club’s deadline passed without United meeting their £108million asking price.

Dembele is considered a fall-back option given the 23-year-old is still regarded as one of the finest talents in the world, despite his struggles at the Camp Nou since joining from Dortmund in 2017.

Barcelona are set for a widespread revamp this summer following their Champions League humiliation against Bayern Munich and the likes of Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique, Arturo Vidal, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho are all likely to be sold.

However, in a wide-ranging interview on Tuesday night, Bartomeu insisted that Dembele is one of a small number of unsellable players this summer.

Asked which players were ‘non-transferable’ this summer, Bartomeu replied: Leo Messi and many other players.

‘It would be a cliché to just say Leo Messi. Messi is the best player in history but there are other non-transferable ones.

‘There are many young players. Ter Stegen, Lenglet, De Jong, Semedo, Dembélé, Griezmann. They are players that we count on a lot and who have come to spend many years at Barca’.

United remain determined to sign Sancho and they believe Dortmund’s ‘deadline’ was a ploy designed to pressurise the club into meeting their asking price.

However, all the noises coming out of Dortmund are that Sancho will stay for at least another season and Juventus winger Douglas Costa has been identified as a target if a deal for the England winger cannot be reached.
