David De Gea feels Manchester United need to add more experience to their team after defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League semi-finals on Sunday night.

The Red Devils took the lead in Cologne but fell to a 2-1 defeat to the Spanish side, despite dominating the game and creating numerous clear cut chances to score.

The defeat means United have fallen in the semi-finals of three competitions this season, having been knocked out in the final four of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup already this campaign.

Their league form was fantastic in the second half of the season, as they secured a third-placed finish in the Premier League, which De Gea says illustrates the vast improvements that have been made under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the last few months.

However, he also feels the Sevilla loss demonstrated the lack of experience in the team and with wiser heads, they would have converted the dominance into a victory.

‘I think we improved already this season,’ the goalkeeper told the Guardian. ‘We were 14 points behind third in the Premier League [in January] and we finished third at the end.

‘We played very good in many games. [Against Sevilla] we deserve to be in the final. But maybe we need a bit more experience in the team.

‘Let’s keep improving, let’s keep fighting for this club and let’s try to win trophies next season. We are going in the right direction. I think we are playing good, attacking football, which we are all enjoying.’

De Gea has come under a fair amount of criticism this season for mistakes he has made and generally not showing the exceptional form he has shown in the past for the Red Devils.

The 29-year-old remains entirely confident in his own abilities, though, and feels he has performed well this season.

‘I trust in myself,’ he said. ‘I showed my qualities all the years, so I just keep available for the manager. I’m always ready to play and try to help the team as always, as I did always.’
