Harry Maguire has encouraged Manchester United supporters to expect silverware sooner rather than later under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the wake of the club’s ‘devastating’ Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla.

The evening got off to the perfect start for the Red Devils as Bruno Fernandes converted their 22nd spot-kick of the season after Marcus Rashford was fouled by Diego Carlos inside the penalty area in Cologne.

But the Premier League giants were made to pay for missing a host of chances as ex-Liverpool man Suso equalised midway through the first half and Luuk de Jong came on to give Sevilla the lead with 12 minutes remaining.

Tensions were high as Fernandes and Victor Lindelof were involved in a furious altercation shortly after the goal and the La Liga outfit – champions in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 – held on to their advantage to secure a place in the final.

Julen Lopetegui’s men will return to the RheinEnergieSTADION on August 21 for a shot at glory against either Inter Milan or Shakhtar Donetsk.

‘It’s difficult. The boys are devastated in there. We created numerous amounts of chances but we’ve got to win the game,’ United captain Maguire told BT Sport after the side’s 2-1 loss.

‘The best team lost and they’ve punished us for missing the chances.

‘We’ve been ruthless at times this year and today we weren’t.’

The England centre-back added: ‘We started with a high press, we scored and then maybe we let them out too easily and they had a bit too much possession for our liking.

‘They didn’t create many chances, if we’re being honest. It’s a ball in the box, obviously they’ve worked it well, down our right we’ve got to do better.

‘We’ll look at it and we’ve got to improve. Conceding from two crosses is not good enough but we worked our socks off there. We deserved to go through but, ultimately, we fell short at a semi-final for the third time this year so it’s disappointing.’

United came up short three times in semi-finals across the campaign but Maguire believes it won’t be long before the team begin winning trophies under Solskjaer’s tutelage.

‘For sure, it will happen soon,’ Maguire said.

‘Obviously, we want to win it [silverware] as soon as possible. You’ve seen the talent on the pitch and the way we’ve improved throughout the season, if we take another giant step next season then we’ll improve again.

‘But it’s disappointing. We want to win silverware. We got to three semi-finals – we were disappointed to lose the game in the Carabao Cup, in the FA Cup we didn’t turn up, tonight we did turn up and deserved to win the game and the best team has lost.’
