Dodgers: Joe Kelly Placed on the Injured List, Adam Kolarek Recalled

The Dodgers will be getting a little bit ahead of Joe Kelly’s suspension starting today. The team placed Kelly on the injured list retroactive to August 9th with what they are calling right shoulder inflammation.

In a corresponding move with Kelly going to the IL, left-handed reliever Adam Koalrek has been recalled. Kolarek will be a fresh arm for the Dodgers out of the bullpen tonight against San Diego.

The move is likely nothing more than the Dodgers preparing for Kelly’s suspension to be upheld. Whatever the number of games ends up being, the decision is likely to come today or tomorrow. Better to have a guy in the bullpen ready to go in his place, hence the move.

Kelly’s appeal hearing for his 8-game suspension was moved back to today. He got that suspension for throwing at Astros players and inciting a benches-clearing incident. It’s unclear at this point how long the league will suspend the Dodgers reliever for.

For Adam Kolarek, this represents a new opportunity to show he can get right-handed hitters out. So far in 2020, he has held them to a .250 batting average in limited appearances. Kolarek has also not been charged with a run in his 3.1 innings of work. The Dodgers optioned him to the alternate site when rosters went down to 28 players last week.

The Dodgers will play the Padres in a four-game series starting tonight in Los Angeles.
