Frank Lampard wants Chelsea to sign John Stones from Manchester City this summer and believes he can help the defender revive his career at Stamford Bridge.

England international Stones is being strongly linked with a move away from the Etihad, having only started 12 Premier League games this season.

The 26-year-old has won two domestic titles, two EFL Cups and the FA Cup since signing from Everton in 2016 but looks set to leave, particularly after City signed Nathan Ake from Bournemouth.

Arsenal – managed by Pep Guardiola’s former assistant Mikel Arteta – and West Ham have been linked with moves for Stones, who has made 133 appearances for Manchester City.

But MirrorSport say Chelsea manager Lampard wants to secure the defender’s signature and has sanctioned a £20m offer for the player.

Chelsea’s defensive struggles have been well documented and Lampard knows he need to strengthen his team in that area to compete for trophies next season.

It is claimed Lampard sees great potential in Stones and believes the centre-half can revive his career at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League this season but lost to Arsenal in the FA Cup final and then suffered another humbling defeat to Bayern Munich in Europe.

Last month, former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson urged Chelsea to sign Manchester City’s Stones.

He told Sky Sports: ‘I’d go and get John Stones for that, and play him in the middle of the three. Then I’d say have Antonio Rudiger and Christensen either side of them.

‘Chelsea love to play out the back, they roll it out every time, so you need someone unbelievably good on the ball.

‘If you have pace around them, I think it will help Chelsea; I think Stones would be a great buy, and he has to play in a three.

‘Stones has the potential to be great, he really has, but he needs the confidence.

‘At the moment Chelsea have three centre-halves that aren’t in the same class as Stones on the ball.’

Lampard has already welcomed new Chelsea signings Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech to Stamford Bridge this summer.
