Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed Eric Garcia is refusing to sign a new deal at the club and is likely to leave this summer.

The highly-rated 19-year-old joined City’s academy from Barcelona in 2017 and he’s become a first-team player this term, with Guardiola keen to show the defender a clear pathway at the Etihad.

Garcia has one year remaining on his deal and City had been keen to tie him down to a long-term extension.

However, Guardiola confirmed today that Garcia has informed the club that he will not sign a new deal and that he wants to leave.

‘He announced to us that he doesn’t want to extend his contract with Manchester City,’ said Guardiola.

‘He has one more year and after that, he doesn’t want to extend. We want it but he doesn’t want to extend it so I imagine he wants to play in other places.’

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are leading the race to sign Garcia and talks have already been opened with the teenager over a move to the Camp Nou.

City will now have to decide whether to cash in on Garcia this summer or to allow him to run his contract down by allowing him to leave on a free transfer next summer.

City signed Nathan Ake for £41m earlier this week and the club are keen on signing another centre-back.
