Paul Scholes feels Manchester United should be considered favourites to win the Europa League this season, with Inter Milan their only realistic competition for the trophy.

United play the second leg of their last 16 tie with LASK on Wednesday night, but with their quarter-final spot basically booked having won the first leg 5-0 in Austria.

If they avoid the monumental upset, the Red Devils will take on FC Copenhagen in the quarter-finals in Cologne on Monday, with the remaining knockout games played over one leg in Germany.

Dangerous sides such as Roma, Sevilla, Bayer Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk and Wolves are all still involved in the tournament, but Scholes does not see any of them competing with his former club, and only considers Inter a threat.

‘I think it’s really exciting to play three games in 10 days, if you go all the way,’ Scholes told BT Sport.

‘I know you’ve said there that there’s some really good teams left in the competition, but for me, United are the best team left in it, they’ve got the best players.

‘They hit some really good form towards the end of season.

‘You’d have to fancy them strongly. I think Inter are the only other team, really, who could cause United problems, so let’s hope for an Inter vs United final.’

Wolves have a great chance to make the last eight of the competition after drawing their first leg away at Olympiakos, but Scholes does not really consider them a threat to United’s quest for silverware.

‘No, I don’t,’ said the former England star. ‘They’re a good team Wolves. I like what they’ve done throughout the season, I like what their manager has done, they’ve got some really good players.

‘I just think, if United had to play Wolves, nine times out of 10 they’d beat them.

‘I don’t think they’re good enough to win this competition with the likes of Roma and Inter. I think United will be too good for all of them, I hope.’

Unsurprisingly, the other former Manchester United player in the BT Sport studio, Owen Hargreaves, felt the same.

‘Scholesy is right, United are the favourites, Inter close behind, but I’m going with United,’ said Hargreaves.
